Hearthstone review

I was in a Reddit thread earlier this week, when a potential Eternal player, coming from Hearthstone, wanted to know about the game, including how free-to-play it was. In many areas of comparison between games there is a subjective element to preference, but I felt like this is an answer that could be solved by cold hard math, and my curiosity was piqued. I decided that I would work through all of this, and post it for everyone to see, so that is what we are going to be talking about today! To begin with, lets sort of the sub-questions, since this has multiple components. We are going to work through all of them over the course of this article. There is a lot of math here, some of which I may have gotten wrong, so please point out any issues if you can find them.

Hearthstone: Wild Leaderboards, Legend Matchmaking, and More

My assumptions about how the Matchmaker algorithm works in practice as a sequence: Player A has a current win-loss ratio. Player A is looking for an opponent, Player B. In order for Player A and Player B to matched versus each other, the “matchmaker range” of A needs to cover B’s current record; and the “matchmaker range” of B needs to cover A’s current record.

1. Sgt. Hammer’s Overview. Sgt. Hammer is a ranged Specialist that excels at dealing large amounts of sustained damage from a very long range. Her unique playstyle, relative lack of mobility, and her fragility mean that her allies must adopt a patient playstyle in order to get the most out of her.

I’ve gone with “amazing” decks, and many other people can attest to the same fate. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. For example, a player who normally plays Casual Play mode in the mornings may try playing at another time of day, only to find the competition more fierce. All my opponents had better decks then me, with good combinations and synergies from first turns. I was and was matched with someone who was Prev 1 2 3 Next.

When a player enters the matchmaking queue the system will attempt to find another player in the queue with an identical matchmaking value. Yeah thats true, it happend to me a few times, once I got matched against the same mage at wins twice and lost them both, I was pissed. In each case the system attempts to find a player of as similar matchmaking value rating, rank or record as possible. Even the best decks start with 0 wins.

Hearthstone (Game)

I started playing Hearthstone a long time ago, just after the beta and I consider myself a quite good arena player, doing above 7 wins regularly and having a bunch of 12 wins. I never use third party tools while drafting, I think strong synergies and weird, insane-all-in decks with good combos are always better than individual ratings if you see that you can go for it and more fun , but I do watch a lot of arena streamers.

So today I started a run with one of the most broken Paladin deck I ever had, not the most broken, but up there in the top.

The Arena is a game mode where players compete against each other using specially constructed decks to earn substantial rewards. It features strong elements of luck and chance, with players essentially gambling upon their own success to try to earn rewards by winning as many games as possible before their deck is knocked out.

Lost Hope 4 years ago 7 here is what blizzard said way back when Arena was first introduced http: Obviously, such a system would improve over time and not be as reliable in the early stages of Hearthstone going live. But no announcement has ever been mention about any change, so it’s safe to assume it still works the same way. This can mean two things One, which is what most people currently believe , is that you are match against people based on the record of your current deck.

If your deck is , it should match you with another deck that has similar record. It doesn’t matter if you went on your previous deck. So if your overall arena record is , they try to match someone that’s closest to your record, independent of your current deck’s record. Blizzard has never officially that i know of confirmed or explain exactly how Arena matching works other than the quote above. Most of the guesses are based on people’s personal experience.

Opening rewards Claiming rewards Once the player has won 12 games in total, lost 3 games, or retired their deck, they will be given a Key to open up the chest for their reward. Much like when opening a card pack, the player will be presented with a number of individual rewards, and must click on each in turn to discover their contents. A range of rewards are possible, with both the number of individual rewards granted and their possible contents determined by the number of games the player has won.

Rewards may consist of card packs , gold , Arcane Dust used for crafting and individual cards, including golden cards. Reward structure[ edit edit source ] Each Key will grant the player a number of rewards, but the contents of each reward is determined randomly according to a range of possible values for that Key. Higher-level Keys grant a larger number of rewards, with more valuable contents.

Higher-level Keys also have a range of possible values for the total number of rewards granted. The win Key does not reward dust as a prize, instead providing other rewards. The remaining rewards are determined randomly from a number of possibilities. The type of each reward appears to be chosen individually from the range of possibilities, with the result that each possible reward may be granted multiple times by the same Key.

For example, a Key may reward several individual portions of arcane dust, several individual cards, or a mix of the possible reward types. All Keys grant the player one guaranteed card pack. Keys at higher levels also offer a guaranteed gold reward, of a larger amount than other possible gold rewards for that Key.

Most of one card in a single deck: A Light in the Darkness is shown, but there may be other examples. Notes Design[ edit edit source ] The design of the Arena provides for a very different way of playing Hearthstone than that found in constructed play. In comparison, Arena rewards players based more on their ability to construct decks from a less than ideal selection of cards, and to improvise in unlikely match circumstances. It also features a greater emphasis on basic gameplay skills, rather than complex strategies and specific gimmicks.

Arena is far less dependent upon knowledge of the current meta, and sees far fewer highly organised decks, but frequently features unlikely, improvised and sometimes extraordinary plays which can be extremely hard to predict. Arena also provides a second chance for cards rarely seen in constructed play.

Casual Play[ edit edit source ] Casual Play mode matchmaking includes a new player pool. Players are initially placed in a separate pool, allowing them to play exclusively against other new players. After a certain period, players are introduced into the main matchmaking pool. Pairings are therefore affected not only by each player’s rating or rank, but by which other players are currently awaiting matchmaking. For example, different times of day often attract different types of players, with certain times typically featuring a slightly more competitive pool of players.

Because of this, each type of ranking is entirely accurate only for that same quality of population. Such variations are not fixed, and may vary by day, time of day, or in relation to calendar or game-related trends. Because wins and losses will ultimately result in an adjusted rating or rank, such variance can also lead to a yo-yo effect with pairings.

For example, a player who normally plays Casual Play mode in the mornings may try playing at another time of day, only to find the competition more fierce. This discrepancy in the player’s matchmaking will likely lead to the player losing several games in a row, resulting in the player’s MMR dropping rapidly in order to select opponents of equal ability. However, should that player then return to playing in the mornings, they may find the opponents selected for them to be extremely easy to defeat, due to the adjustment of their MMR.

Bias[ edit edit source ] A common complaint from players is that the matchmaking system is intentionally matching them against opponents using decks designed to beat them.

Reviews 3 Description Arena is a great way to earn valuable rewards — gold, dust to craft new cards, booster packs and various cards. Quantity of rewards is directly linked to how well you perform in your arena run and how many matches you win. Unlike other modes, matches in Arena are even for all players, your rank and card collection doesnt matter. Also, matchmaking will find you an opponent with same winorloss ratio, which helps better gameplay. To get Arena pass, you must pay gold — in return you get an arena key and possibility to earn a great reward!

You play with unique decks, drafted card by card specifically for this mode from the pool of Standard cards with a few exceptions and following a slightly different ruleset. The Arena run finishes when one of the two conditions is met — either you get to 12 wins and get the best possible rewards or you lose three games and your run ends no matter how high you got. Which means that the run can end at or it can end at The higher you get — the better rewards you earn. Rewards are counted for the score you ended up with so if you retire at , it counts the rewards for 0 wins.

Players are generally matched against others with very similar scores to even the chances. However, if you get past seven wins, especially during off-hours, the matchmaking gets a bit looser.
